The map “Map of a Part of the Island of Cérigo” was created by M. Barbié du Bocage, according to data provided by Antoine-Laurent Castellan from his experiments in Kythira.
The map shows the eastern part of the island in detail, including the ancient city of Kythira and the port of Skandeia.
The map “Plan d’une partie de l’ile de Cérigo,” as described in Antoine-Laurent Castellan’s work titled “Lettres sur la Morée et les iles de Cérigo, Hydra, et Zante,” was published in 1808 in Paris by the publishing house H. Agasse.
This map offers researchers, historians, and geography enthusiasts a valuable resource for understanding the geomorphology and characteristics of Kythira during that period.
Attached below is Giorgos Tolias’s publication, «In the Shadow of the Travelers: The Greek Geographical and Cartographic Work of Jean-Denis Barbié du Bocage.»
Barbié du Bocage served as a geographer for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a member of the Institute, Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Paris, a founding member and president of the Geographical Society, and a member of nearly all European academies. He was awarded the Legion of Honor, held a prominent position in the world of letters, and represented his homeland in the field of geographical sciences during the period of its great Napoleonic splendor.
