In the final straight for its completion is the Landfill of Waste (Landfill) in Kythera, with a budget of 6.300.000,00 euros. The project, which has been included in the E.P. Attica and co-financed by the European Regional Support Fund, was initiated by the previous administration of the Region and the current administration has made it a priority, contributing substantially to its timely completion through coordinated actions.
Given that work on the facilities is almost complete, the trial operation of the landfill basin has started. The trial operation is implemented by placing in the basin the residues i.e. waste that is neither recyclable nor compostable. During the trial operation, all facilities will be in operation and monthly environmental checks will be carried out for the amount of biogas discharged, water control, etc. According to the design, the project is expected to be completed by May 2021.
It should be noted that the rehabilitation of the 2 former uncontrolled landfills in Kythera and Antikythera has been completed in accordance with national and European regulations, which helped to lift the fine of 320,000 € per year that our country was paying to the European Union. In Kythera the contractual scope has been completed to the extent of 97%, while on the island of Antikythera the contractual works have been completed to the extent of 80%.
On the occasion of the start of the trial operation, the Regional Governor said:
«With the contribution of the Region of Attica, the Municipality of Kythera managed to solve the problem of waste management and put an end to the fines imposed in the country. This is an important project initiated by the previous administration of the Region and we managed with coordinated actions and plan to accelerate its completion, as for us the infrastructure related to waste management is of the highest priority. We are using all the financial tools at our disposal in order to ensure the equal development of all the Municipalities of Attica. Our aim is to make the citizens living in remote areas, on barren islands such as Kythera, feel that we are actively at their side. With infrastructure projects we support Kythera, aiming at their development and the promotion of their beauty and history».
The Regional Governor Giorgos Patoulis has asked the responsible Deputy Regional Governor Islands Vaso Theodorakopoulou-Bogri coordinate the necessary procedures and be in close cooperation with the Mayor S. Harhalakis. On the occasion of the trial operation, the Vice-Regional Governor says: «With systematic work and with the close cooperation of the Region of Attica and the Municipality of Kythera puts an end to the problem of waste with the creation of a state-of-the-art waste management area.
