The predictions of the Professor of Environmental Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Demosthenes Sarigiannis for the development of the pandemic in our country in the next period are frightening due to the dynamics of the Omicron variant. The professor, who is preparing a report on the subject to the Megaron Maximou and Kyriakos Mitsotakis and will send it by Friday at the latest, appears confident that we will not avoid a universal lockdown.
According to voria.gr, Dim. Sarigiannis speaking to 102 FM ERT-3 said that all the evidence converges that the problem will come very quickly and will be very big. «If there is a universal lockdown from 3 January it will last a month. If we get to the 16th, when we estimate that the cases will still be 6,000 a day, then it will go until March.» he stressed.
«By New Year's Day the Omicron mutation will account for over 50% of cases in our country», he noted. He pointed out that the recent decline in cases and hospitalizations already shows signs of reversal since yesterday.
Dim. Sarigiannis estimated that the problem will be big at first in the Larissa, in Chania, in Sitia and in Athens, which will accelerate the spread of Omicron.
Finally, as regards the schools the professor estimated that should not be opened on 10 January. He even revealed that many private schools have already started testing tele-education again. In the same context, he stressed that it would be criminal mistake to make the first semester exams in universities in person.
