Diatsenta

Hyacinthus orientalis L. var.albulus (Jord.) Baker

Diatoms bloom in late January and flood our yards with fragrance. It is a native, bulbous plant quite common throughout the Mediterranean, and has been naturalized as an epiphytic throughout most of the world. The cultivated variety is much more conspicuous but without the strong aroma, thanks to which its essential oil is used in perfumery. In Kythera we call it diatsenta (the), while in Corfu, it is called diatsento (the). The name comes from the Italian giacinto = hyacinth.
