Chania: Unbreakable connection Kissamos and Kythera - Completed the twinning of the two municipalities

The twinning between the Municipality of Kissamos and the Municipality of Kythera, which had started in 2021, was completed on Monday morning.

The event, the second part of the twinning, which took place at the Municipality of Kissamos, was attended by the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, the Member of Parliament of Chania, Vassilis Digalakis, the Mayor of Chania Panagiotis Simandirakis, the Mayor of Sfakia Manousos Chiotakis and representatives of the local church.

At the beginning of the ceremony, the two mayors referred to the unbreakable relations that unite the two municipalities, while the continuity and the connection that exists between them from antiquity until today over the years was emphasized, while many residents of Kythera and Antikythera come from the area of Kissamos, as during the Turkish occupation, many moved to the two islands.

The Mayor of Kissamos, George Mylonakis, during his greeting, spoke warmly about the Municipality of Kythera, while he referred to the relations that connect the two regions, not only geographically but also substantially since the contacts between the residents of the two regions remain unchanged.

In his turn, the Mayor of Kythera Stratos Harhalakis said that the twinning of the municipalities should have been done years ago, because of the culture that connects the two regions, while historically he mentioned the connection between Ancient Falassarna and Kythera during the period of antiquity.

In fact, the origin of the Mayor himself is from Kissamos, as he said that the village of his grandparents, Charchaliana, is very close to the town of Kissamos.

Finally, the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, stressed the cultural connection between the two regions and the importance of extroversion expressed through twinning.

Then, the Mayor of Kissamos presented as a gift to both the Mayor of Kythera and the Minister, a copy of the Telfos agreement between Falassarna and Polyrrinia.

In turn, Mr. Harhalakis offered to the Mayor of Kissamos a copy of the Ephibos of the Antikithira and to the Minister of Culture a plate which served as a “notebook” which in the 4th century BC was used for learning to write by children. The letter “K” was carved on it, which was also symbolic, since the names of both cities begin with it.

It is recalled that the first phase of the twinning process took place in September 2021, in Antikythera.
