Ablemona the blessed (photos)

From Eleni Charou's blog.

One of the most picturesque spots on Kythira is Ablemona, During the Venetian era, it was called port of Agios Nikolaos and was one of the three ports of Kythira.

The small castle at the entrance to the port was built around 1725 and is the third fortress built by the Venetians in Kythera. It has an internal corridor with 14 arches, and during the restoration work, 11 of these were reinforced and repaired. At its peak, it had battlements, observation posts, and cannons.

Nearby, in 1802, the ship «MENTOR» carrying the Parthenon marbles sank, and they remained at the bottom of the Avelmonas sea for some time.

A historic building is the Kavallini residence, which housed the Austro-Hungarian consulate in Kythira. Angelo Cavallini from Genoa settled on the island and was the Austro-Hungarian vice-consul in Kythira. He and his descendants acted as agents for the Trieste ships that called at Kythira.
