The calendar says 1968. At a time when Kythera was looking for new ways, a group of people with vision and an unquenchable love for the sea, laid the foundations for something unprecedented on the island: the Kythera Yacht Club (N.O.K.). The pioneers of this movement were historical figures of the place, such as Manolis Daponte, who together with the first Board of Directors envisioned a “school” of the sea for the children of Kythera.
The aim was not just sports, but contact with the wet element, learning to swim, water skiing and, of course, sailing.
The great benefactor: Nicholas Panagiotou Lourantos
Every great project needs its pillars. For N.O.K., the man who gave life to the project was Nikolaos P. Lourantos. Born in Kalisperianika of Kythera at the end of the 19th century and later an immigrant, he never forgot his homeland. He became a great benefactor of the Group, actively supporting its infrastructure. In his honour, the main pier was named after him, creating a point of reference.

But his contribution did not stop at the cement and the piers. With his funding, the Club acquired its first boats, the now legendary Optimist, which were the boats on which generations of young sailors were nurtured.

The first races & the recognition
The local community immediately embraced the effort. The games organized on the island were top social and sporting events. The whole world gathered around the bay to cheer the children and applaud the effort.

In the context of these games, award ceremonies and speeches were staged that have gone down in history. The central figure in these events was Stratis Kaloutsis, who from the podium expressed the gratitude of the entire island.

Of course, the speech was also given to the benefactor himself, Nikolaos Lourando, who addressed his compatriots with modesty, seeing his vision for the children of Kythera taking shape.

The people behind the idea
The N.O.K. could not exist without the collective work of its Board of Directors. People like Manolis Dapontes, Kosmas Pastos, Thanasis Venardos, Spyros Avgerinos, Takis Aronis and Stratis Kaloutsis (as well as the lawyer Spyros Stratios who helped legally during the difficult years of the dictatorship), created a strong team.

A legacy for the future
Today, almost six decades later, these photographs are not just a nostalgic archive. They are living proof of the power of cooperation, vision and love of place. The Kythera Yacht Club, through its history, continues to remind us that the greatest investment is that made in children and in the education that the sea itself offers them.
