Exercises in conservatism

Any hysteria in the media, any witch hunt against infected citizens, every attempt to coerce people into getting vaccinated, every campaign aimed at finding an internal enemy to distract attention from the dysfunctions and failures of the government's pandemic strategy, must be abandoned immediately and at every level.

Below are the figures from the National Institute of Health (Italy) that were published on November 13, 2021.

I would like to state that although I am very cautious about any data originating from the government, due to the repeated manipulations we have seen, for the sake of discussion and in an effort to provide calm reasoning, I will consider the information presented as fact.

1) Total population over 12 years of age: 54,009,942

  • Unvaccinated: 8,302,865 (15.41%)
  • Partially vaccinated (one dose): 2,538,614 (4.7%)
  • Fully vaccinated (two doses): 42,873,744 (79.41%)
  • Vaccinated with the third dose: 294,719 (0.5%)
  • Total vaccinated: 84.6%

If we include unvaccinated children under the age of 12 in the unvaccinated population, as we should, the ratios are approximately: 25% unvaccinated citizens versus 75% vaccinated citizens.

2) Total new positive cases in the last 30 days: 95,950

  • Unvaccinated: 40,182 (41.91%)
  • Vaccinated with one dose: 3,466 (3.6%)
  • Fully vaccinated (two doses): 52,016 (54.2%)
  • Vaccinated with third dose: 286 (0.3%)

Therefore, the 25% of the unvaccinated accounts for 41.9% of infections, while the 75% of the vaccinated accounts for 58.1% of infections. This is sufficient to say that the vaccine is somewhat effective in reducing infections, but not decisively so. If the vaccine were useless, the percentage of vaccinated individuals who would become ill would be 75%, whereas in fact it is 17 percentage points lower. It's a small thing. At the same time, however, it is something incredibly far removed from the narrative of the «infected» on the one hand versus the «immune» on the other, which turns out to be nothing more than a slanderous story.

Overall, of course, given that many more citizens are vaccinated (and move around more freely), for every individual infection that occurs today, it is much more likely to have been caused by a vaccinated person than an unvaccinated one. However, vaccination seems to be of little use in limiting infections.

3) Total deaths in the last 30 days: 772

  • Unvaccinated: 361 (46.8%)
  • Vaccinated with one dose: 27 (3.5%)
  • Fully vaccinated (two doses): 384 (49.7%)

Therefore, the 25% of unvaccinated individuals accounts for 46.8% of deaths, while the 75% of vaccinated individuals accounts for 53.2% of deaths. And here we have reason to say that the vaccine provides some coverage against the risk of death. If it provided no coverage, the number of deaths among the vaccinated would be 21.8% higher. So this is good news: the vaccine is not useless. But from this point to the narrative that «anyone who is not vaccinated dies and kills» we are light years away.

From this picture of the facts, which could not be more official, I believe we should draw some sober and simple conclusions (at least, if we still live in a country capable of reasoning).

1) Leaving aside any questions about unwanted side effects (an issue that should be addressed transparently, but is being handled opaquely), these data suggest that vaccines can play a role in limiting the pandemic, both in terms of infections and deaths. This is a good thing.

2) Vaccines, however, are not capable of preventing infections or eliminating deaths. They do not even come close to these goals. Even if we vaccinated 100% of the population, it would not be a way to leave the Covid problem behind us once and for all. To place such a burden on the vaccine is a very harmful folly.

3) A logical strategy to reduce the impact of the pandemic should reasonably combine targeted vaccination of the most vulnerable individuals with a timely therapeutic approach (even more shamefully neglected) to achieve mild endemicity of the virus. The proven longer duration of immunity after infection would allow for herd immunity, which the vaccination campaign alone cannot achieve. Failure to equip oneself adequately, according to current knowledge, at the therapeutic level is irresponsible.

4) Any hysteria in the media, any witch hunt against infected citizens, every attempt to coerce people into getting vaccinated, every campaign aimed at finding an internal enemy to distract attention from the dysfunctions and failures of the government's pandemic strategy must be abandoned immediately and at every level.

Those who insist on this socially divisive approach do so for reasons that have nothing to do with health. Therefore, those who promote artificial social division bear a serious responsibility towards the country, because the damage caused by the social divide that is being created is already much more serious and lasting than any damage that the virus can cause.
