Retail trade calls for immediate opening

The trade associations of the Greek countryside are on the rails for breaking the promise of the government and Kir. Mitsotakis personally to open the retail trade in mid-December, while Plan B with full reopening of the retail trade from January 1 is also demanded by Mr. Vakakis.

The market operation plan with click away, proves after two days of operation, very problematic, as it had predicted the president of the Athens Professional Chamber G. Hadjitheodosiou, who, just last Friday, had predicted that only 10% of commercial enterprises - i.e. those that already had e-shop and the required large size - they could work that way.

Impossible to make the market work with click away

This has been proven in practice, mainly in the countryside but also in some large urban centres, where shopkeepers have found that this measure makes no sense, since customers cannot enter the store.

For this reason, almost all the trade associations in the province adopt a more aggressive rhetoric than their counterparts in the basin. A rhetoric that translates into immediate market opening and the abandonment of click away.

Georgiades tries to hold back the Cretans

Indeed, the Federation of Commercial Associations of Crete, in a letter to the Prime Minister, announced that shops under 200 square metres will open normally from 18 December, subject to compliance with all health protocols.

This first announcement of collective disobedience to the announced government measures caused the immediate reaction of the Minister of Development Adonis Georgiades, who, speaking in a broadcast of Crete TV, said that the shops in Crete will open on 7 January, provided that no increase in the epidemiological burden will be observed in the medium term.

Bell for Jumbo and request for Plan B from Vakakis

For his part, the Apostle Vakakis, patriarch of the well-known chain Jumbo, in an interview with the financial website Euro2day, said that the choice to keep Jumbo closed and not adopt click away was made because it was considered to have «questionable results». He even called on the government, «to implement a Plan B from January 1, with full opening of the retail trade, with full liberalisation of working hours and a 7-day, or, if necessary, alternating between sectors and chains, in order to give equal opportunities to all retailers without exception».

App. Vakakis even sounded the alarm even for the multinational BELA, stating that «transnational corporations, such as Jumbo and many others, which are obliged to plan their operations on a 12-monthly basis, are unable to remain on a survival path through ‘watch and do’ procedures.

The vaccine solution is a process that will pay off in 5-6 months. By extension, it is necessary to formulate from now on the plan B for the entire retail sector, because, due to the original plan ’we close in November, to work in December‘, the retail sector was not given the opportunity to survive by operating part of November and December, as was the case in all other countries of the world without exception.’.
