Cavafy's correspondence with 2 Kytherians

From Eleni Charou's blog.

In 1925 the Kytherian philologist, Headmaster of the Kythera Gymnasium, the late Spyros Stathis, sent a letter to Cavafy, in Alexandria and begged him to send him his poems to teach them in the last classes. The poet responded immediately and sent a letter of reply to Stathis in Kythera along with his poems, which the pioneering teacher taught his students at a time when the poems of Cavafy were not circulated in Athens, nor were they included in the textbooks. Even in his birthplace, Alexandria, they were not systematically taught in the schools of the expatriate community.

The second Kytherian (by birth) who corresponded with Cavafy (about 60 letters) was Marios Vagianos, son of Lemon Prieas from the Logothetical, writer, critical researcher, journalist. Born in Egypt, Vagianos came to Athens in 1922 and from 1923 to 1931 he was systematically involved in the promotion of Kavadis' work and became one of the best Kavadis.

Cavafy himself wrote about Vagjanos «My friend Mr. Vagjanos, how good he seemed to me during these years, supporting my poetry! How much I am indebted to him and how much I owe him for this great favour!»
