The situation on the streets of Agia Pelagia in Kythera has become a serious problem, causing strong reactions from the local community and political confrontation between local actors. The «bombed streets», as they were described in a recent report by Adelin FM, highlight the chronic maintenance deficiencies of the road network, endangering the daily lives of residents.
The Adelin FM Report
In the station's report, readers complained about the tragic situation in the streets of Agia Pelagia, asking for other problematic points beyond the centre of the settlement to be presented. Photographs published reveal «carriageways» full of dirt and gravel, which at the first rain turn into muddy spots outside residential areas. The repaired parts of the water supply network, crudely covered with gravel instead of cement, are a prime example of sloppiness.

Statement by Mayor Efstratios Harhalakis
Responding to the reactions, the Mayor of Kythera, Efstratios Harhalakis, said that the restoration of worn pavements has already been scheduled:
«The rehabilitation of the deteriorated pavements in St. Pelagia will be done after Monday due to the upcoming rains. The contract has been in place since 10/29 and we obviously did not expect self-submitting. We know how to do what we need to do.».
The statement, however, did not satisfy residents who are experiencing the consequences of inaction on a daily basis.
Intervention of Local President Takis Alevisopoulos
The Local President of Potamos - Agia Pelagia, Takis Alevizopoulos, brought to light the long delay in solving the problem. He recalled that since last January, in a meeting of residents, he had informed the Municipality about the potholes in the area. Despite his constant pressure, the situation remains stagnant:
«For these extremely dangerous potholes, I called the Deputy Mayor Mr. Kominos, who referred me to the technical department of the Municipality. They told us that the contractor has been awarded the contract, but the result is what you see. I hope that in the future we will not need articles to be heard».
Political confrontation and social pressure
The case of the roads of Agia Pelagia brings to the surface chronic deficiencies in the management of municipal infrastructure. On the one hand, the Mayor is trying to reassure residents with promises, while on the other hand, the local community, with the support of the Local President, is demanding immediate solutions and long-term planning.
With winter approaching, the residents of Agia Pelagia have to cope with the adverse conditions, while the political debate on the issue is expected to continue. The issue, beyond temporary solutions, prioritises the need for sustainable infrastructure to serve the needs of the community.
