There was a particularly strong response to the call for volunteers to clean up the beach at Diakofto, after a large amount of debris was scattered from the boat that had run aground in the area.
More than 30 volunteers, most of whom are young people, arrived on the beach Tuesday afternoon and got to work, gathering pieces of the boat and all kinds of debris that had been scattered across the beach and the rocks.
The cleanup effort had immediate and visible results. A large portion of the beach was cleaned up, and the trash cans that had been placed in the area were filled with the debris collected by the volunteers.
A typical example is his post Diakofti.gr, which notes:
«And yet… if we had more trash cans, we would have finished today. More than 30 young people answered the spontaneous call and cleaned up most of the beach. We’ll continue tomorrow!»
It should be noted that, to facilitate this effort, prior consultation had taken place with the Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection Yiannis Katsanevakis for the placement of large-capacity bins, so that large sections of the vessel can be collected.
However, as today’s cleanup effort shows, the volume of debris was so great that the available bins filled up, while a significant amount of debris still remains in the area.
The volunteer effort to be continued tomorrow, with the goal of completing the cleanup of the coastline.
