Mayor of Tilos Maria Kammas: «Our islands are dying – we are fighting alone» (video)

With words of emotion and anger, the mayor of Tilos Maria Kamma spoke at the KEDE conference in Alexandroupolis, describing the harsh reality of the small Aegean islands.

«The islands are dying», he stressed, asking the State to seriously address the issue of «double insularity», which concerns small islands dependent on larger ones.

Ms Kamma presented shocking figures on demographic collapse: «From 1951 to 2011, 50 islands were deserted and 16 are at risk of desertion.» She also referred to health and education problems, with examples from the daily life of Tilos, where the lack of doctors and the indifference of services put lives at risk.

«The state remembers the islands only in wishful thinking. We are struggling on our own, without national aid,» he stressed, noting that despite the obstacles, Tilos has won European awards for its sustainable development.

In closing, the mayor revealed that she is fighting her own personal battle with MS, saying: «I can cope with my illness more easily than I can cope with the beasts of the state»
