Since the summer of 2000, following an invitation from the Community of Antikythera, which wishes to create an archaeological park, a team from the 17th(formerly B) Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities began a limited-scale excavation at the site of the castle in the north of the island. Archaeologist Aris Tsaravopoulos, head of the excavation program, published an article in the archaeological magazine HOROS referring to specific findings such as the inscription IG V 1,948 and the inscribed lead weights from the Castle of Antikythera.
