Eurozone: Greece has the third worst GDP per capita

Greece had the third worst GDP per capita in the eurozone, which demonstrates the great difficulties faced by its citizens due to the energy crisis and high inflation.

Specifically, according to Eurostat, in 2022, gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in purchasing power terms ranged from 591% of the EU average in Bulgaria to 2611% in Luxembourg. Greece ranks third worst, after Bulgaria and Slovakia.

The above findings are based on preliminary estimates of citizens' purchasing power in terms of GDP published today by Eurostat.

Significant differences between Member States

The data show significant differences between EU members in terms of GDP per capita, which is used to measure economic activity. In 2022, Luxembourg and Ireland recorded the highest levels of GDP per capita (161% and 134% above the EU average, respectively).

Denmark (36% above the EU average), the Netherlands (30%), Austria (25%), Belgium (21%), Sweden (19%), and Germany followed at a distance (17%).

In contrast, Bulgaria (41% below the EU average), Slovakia (33%), and Greece (32%) recorded the lowest GDP per capita.
