Journalist and politician George Romeos died on Friday morning. He served as director of Vima, director general of ERT, MP, MEP and vice-president of the European Parliament and minister with PASOK. He also served as vice-president of the HESIEA from 1976 to 1978.
George Romanos was born in Corfu in 1934. He studied economics at the Athens School of Economics and then followed journalism at the newspaper «To Vima», while as an envoy of the «Vima» and «Nea» in Thessaloniki he made important investigations into the murder of Grigoris Lambrakis.
In 1981, with the election of PASOK, he was appointed Director General of ERT, and in 1984 he was elected PASOK MEP (re-elected in the 1989 European elections). On 13 October 1993 he was appointed Deputy Minister of National Economy and then Deputy Minister of National Economy. In 1994, at the 3rd PASOK Congress, he was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Movement and on 15 September 1995 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs until January 1996. In the 1996 elections he was elected MP for Athens and became Minister of Public Order until October 1998.

He was imprisoned during the years of the dictatorship for his action and participation in the PAK alongside Andreas Papandreou.
He was a distinguished journalist and writer. He expressed contemporary views and served the Democratic Party with dedication and selflessness.
George Romeos leaves behind a great legacy with his political career and his writing.
