Art on the Islands: Kythira
Full of sights, enchanting trails, and beautiful beaches that offer plenty of opportunities for activities, Kythira also has a cultural side that, naturally, comes to life even more in the summer.
So let's take a look at what there is to see on the island this time of year to round out the vacation experience.
The Concept of the Exhibition Fragile Thread, which is supported by NEON, began with old handmade textiles and parts of damaged looms found in trash bins on Kythira. It does not set out to explore the history of Kythira’s traditional weavers. Rather, it highlights the story of their disappearance. Through direct engagement with the last remnants of the humble yet poignantly beautiful handmade Kythirian textiles, the art collective Chorus Effect seeks to raise public awareness about the gradual disappearance of local cultural heritage and to help viewers grasp the «thin thread» on which our past hangs. The exhibition will be on view all summer (and through the end of the year) at the River Philharmonic.

Second stop in Kapsali, where the Follow your Art Gallery In collaboration with the gallery, a.antonopoulou.art, they are presenting the photographer for the first time in Kythira Yiannis Tzortzis at the environmental photography exhibition titled Natura Transita (or «Nature in Transition»). Giorgos’s exhibition (which will run through August 4), beyond his ceaseless experiential journey through the ocean of personal responsibility and authentic artistic expression, is an urgent call for collective awareness of just how much we—and future generations—still depend on our choices. Nature, in any case, will continue its transformation even without us. Yannis Tzortzis is a member of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain (RPS) and has traveled the world with the Green Project organization, under the auspices of the Greek National Commission for UNESCO, to raise social awareness through environmental photography.

It's also interesting to note that until August 10, at the Archaeological Museum of Kythera will be offered to the public free guided tours (at 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.) with the purchase of a ticket. Admission to the museum is free for children and young people up to age 25, for holders of a free admission pass, as well as for the unemployed. Free guided tours will also be offered at the Permanent Exhibition of Eco-Labels which will be presented at the Castle of Chora, Kythira (on July 29, 31, and August 8).
