The government of Venezuela one by one«gesture of goodwill» towards USA, released two imprisoned American citizens.
According to a Reuters report, one of the two detainees released was Gustavo Cardenas, one of six Citgo Oil executives arrested and convicted in 2017. The second was Jorge Alberto Fernández, an American of Cuban descent.
The recent visit by the delegation of USA in Caracas, revealed by the Associated Press, focused not only on the release of American prisoners, but also on the easing of US sanctions on Venezuela in order to fill the supply gap left by Biden's embargo on Russian oil.
As Reuters notes, the normalization of relations with Maduro, a long-time enemy of the US and Russia's closest ally in South America, was also intended to highlight whether Venezuela is ready to distance itself from Russia.
We also recall that one of the first moves of the Mitsotakis government was to recognize the coup leader, Juan Guaidó, as the legitimate president of Venezuela.
