In this study, Eleni Leontsini analyzes and interprets, based on political theories, a unique institution of the Ionian Islands, namely the Local or Regional Property of Kythira and Antikythira, with regard to its historical and political implications. The system of Local Property in Kythira and Antikythira constitutes a unique and distinctive case of communal administration and is of interest not only in terms of its practical application on the islands, but also in terms of its significance for political theory as a system of administration and management of inter-community property by the local government bodies of Kythira and Antikythira, as applied in practice. This paper is divided into two parts. The first part addresses the historical context of the Local Property of Kythira and Antikythira, discussing the historical circumstances that contributed to the creation of this institution during the period of British Protectorate (1809/1815–1864), the partial continuation of this institution following the union of the Ionian Islands with the «free» Greek State (1864), and finally to the legislative reinstatement of the Local Property regime in the 1980s (Law 1416/1984), though now in a different and strengthened form. In the second part of her presentation, she discusses the political ideas underlying the institution of Local Property, its theoretical significance for political science and philosophy, and highlights the uniqueness of this institution within Greece, thereby attempting an evaluation of a distinctive institution and demonstrating the relationship between philosophy, politics, law, and history.

Biography of Eleni Leontsini
Eleni Leontsini is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Ioannina. She studied philosophy at the Universities of Athens, University College London and Glasgow. Her research interests focus on the history of philosophy, with emphasis on Aristotle, and on ethical and political philosophy.
