With a record number of candidates, 14 in number, the submission of nominations to the General Election Commissioner of the Ministry of Interior for the nomination of the President of the Republic of Cyprus was completed shortly after 12 noon.
As it was announced and in the order in which the nominations were submitted, the candidates for the Cyprus Presidency are:
Andreas Efstratiou, Luke Stavrou, Celestina De Petro, Christos Christou, Andronikos Zervides, Achilleas Demetriades, Alexios Savvidis, Andreas Mavroyiannis, George Kolokasidis, Averof Neophytou, Charalambos Aristotelous, Konstantinos Christofides, Julia Hovrina Komnenos and Nikos Christodoulides.
As stated after the conclusion of the procedure held at the Filoxenia Conference Centre in Nicosia, the General Election Commissioner Costas Constantinou stated that, in accordance with the provisions of the Law on the Election of the President and Vice President of the Republic, until 18:00 this afternoon, a deadline for objections against any nomination formally submitted, for any of the reasons mentioned in Article 13.1 of the Law, is given. If an objection is lodged, it will be dealt with expeditiously so that the nominations can be finalised.
In addition, he said, on Monday a draft of the ballot paper, which is already being prepared by the government printing office in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, will be presented to the representatives of the candidates. Once the design is finalised, the printing of the ballot papers will begin.
It is noted that any citizen of the Republic who has reached the age of 35, has not been convicted of a crime of dishonour or moral turpitude or has been deprived of eligibility following a court decision due to an electoral offence is eligible to stand as a candidate, not be suffering from a mental illness which renders him/her incapable of performing the duties of President of the Republic and not have served consecutively in the office of President of the Republic for the immediately preceding two terms.
Finally, in accordance with the provisions of Article 11 of the Law, each candidate has deposited or caused to be deposited with the Supervisor of Elections the sum of two thousand Euros or a written receipt issued by or on behalf of the Accountant General for two thousand Euros received by or on behalf of the candidate.
The fee is refundable if the candidate receives 3% of the total valid votes. The date of the elections for the election of the new President of Cyprus is Sunday 5 February and, if a second round is needed, Sunday 12 February 2023.
