New York has turned a new page. Zoran Mamdani, 34, a representative of the left wing of the Democratic Party and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), was elected on Tuesday as the new mayor of the American metropolis, securing 50.4% of the vote according to the results so far.
Mamdani thus becomes the first Muslim and South Asian to be elected mayor of New York City, as well as the youngest in a century.
Mamdani defeated the 67-year-old former state governor, Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent and garnered 41.6%, and Republican Curtis Silua, who received only 7.1%.
«We are on the verge of making history, of saying goodbye to the politics of the past,» Mamdani said shortly after casting his vote in Astoria, Queens, his electoral stronghold.
Throughout the election campaign, Donald Trump made no secret of his opposition to Mamdani, warning that ’it will be difficult to allocate federal funds to a city governed by a communist.«.
On election day, in fact, he wrote on Truth Social: «Any Jew who votes for Zoran Mamdani is an idiot,» accusing him of «hating Jews.».
Mamdani, who had come under fire for his criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies, remained steadfast in his views, emphasizing that he fully supports the Jewish community in New York.
From Uganda to Queens
Born in Kampala, Uganda, to a family of Indian intellectuals, Mamdani immigrated to the United States at the age of seven. He studied African Studies at Bowdoin College and became a U.S. citizen in 2018. His mother is the well-known filmmaker Mira Nair, and his father, Mahmoud Mamdani, is a professor at Columbia University.
Before running for mayor, he had been elected to the local council representing Queens. His political platform, focused on workers’ issues and the rising cost of living, earned him widespread popularity, especially among young voters.
Radical Agenda
The new mayor is proposing a package of measures that includes free bus rides, universal child care, and a rent freeze on rent-controlled housing — policies he promises to fund by raising taxes on high incomes.
Although Republicans label him a «communist,» analysts point out that his proposals are more in line with social democracy than with the revolutionary left.
Internal Party Turmoil and Political Messages
Cuomo’s strong showing as an independent highlighted internal tensions within the city’s Democratic Party, while the Republican vote share remained low. Nevertheless, the high voter turnout—1.75 million by 6:00 p.m., compared to 1.15 million in 2021—indicates that the race mobilized a large segment of the electorate.
«Mamdani’s victory sends a clear message pointing toward a new generation of politicians,» political scientist Kostas Panagopoulos told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), noting that his election «may inspire similar movements in other U.S. cities.».
A Wave of Democratic Victories
Mamdani's election comes on a night of victories for the Democrats. Abigail Spanberger became Virginia’s first female governor, Mickey Sherrill won in New Jersey, while in California, Governor Gavin Newsom won voter support for redistricting.
Zoran Mamdani will take office on January 1 in a city facing serious social problems.
