What will happen with masks in supermarkets?

There are only a few days left until the restrictions are lifted. Masks will be phased out in the second stage, which remains a «gray area» for supermarkets.

Vaccination and recovery certificates, as well as rapid tests for unvaccinated individuals in restaurants, will end on May 1; however, the removal of the mask It's set for June 1.

And although it has been announced that it will not be mandatory in indoor spaces, it has not yet been clarified whether it will continue to apply in supermarket, or at hair salons, or on public transportation.

In his latest announcements regarding the lifting of restrictions, the Minister of Health, Thanos Plevris, although he had said that the mandatory use of masks would be lifted, there will nevertheless be exceptions that will be clarified in the Joint Ministerial Decision to be issued.

In any case, according to the plan that the Committee of Experts had been discussing since March, supermarkets and hair salons were at the top of the list of indoor spaces, where it is possible that they will no longer be mandatory but will instead be recommended.

For employees in these specific areas, however, it is likely that masks will remain required.

Which measure has not yet been repealed?

The measures will be suspended for four months and are expected to be reassessed starting in September. The suspension will take place in two stages:

  • The May 1 The requirement to show proof of vaccination, recovery from COVID-19, or a negative rapid test result is being lifted for restaurants, retail stores, and other venues where it has been mandatory for the past eight months.
  • The June 1 The second phase of lifting the restrictions will follow, with the requirement to wear masks indoors being lifted for both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.

What has not yet been abolished is the mandatory rapid test for unvaccinated employees, in order to go to work. For the time being, instead of two tests, they will undergo one test per week, and the day of the week on which they must take the test is also expected to be clarified in the Joint Ministerial Decision.

However, this measure, too, may be repealed by summer.
