A short video filmed by a tourist in Kythira was enough to spark a new round of discussions on social media, make its way on television screens across the country, and, ultimately, to provoke a strong reaction from the island’s municipal authorities.
The Rise to Fame: From TikToker to SKAI
It all began when a visitor to the island used his camera to record a crew from the Municipality of Kythira repairing damage to the road surface. More specifically, the work was being carried out on the Kapsali downhill stretch, in the “Hydragogeio” area. The video shows a municipal utility vehicle driving over the repair site to compact the material, rather than using a specialized road roller.
The video quickly went viral online, racking up about 300,000 views and sparking comments about «Greek ingenuity,» even making its way onto morning television. Yesterday, August 11, on the show «SKAI ONLINE» Featuring journalists Chrysa Batou and Marjy Lazarou, the video was featured in the "viral topics" section.
During the screening, the show’s hosts and the segment’s reporter commented on the images with a mix of humor and reflection:
- It was pointed out that, although the method seems paradoxical, «It looks like the job is done» and that it's the result that counts.
- At the same time, it was noted that this was a minor local repair («patch job») in a remote location, where heavy construction equipment may not have been available, while it was noted that the tourist himself, in his comments, justified the situation.
The story was quickly picked up by national news websites, and late that same evening, it was also reported by local media in Kythira (AdelinFM).
Immediate response from the municipal government: «Paving is one thing; potholes are another.»
The extent to which the issue gained traction prompted an immediate response from the Kythira Municipal Administration. At noon today, the municipality’s Secretary General, John Andronikos, issued a written statement, which he shared with local media outlets (AdelinFM, Kythiraika Nea).

The full statement by Yannis Andronikos, Secretary General of the Municipality of Kythira:
«Paving the road is one thing, but fixing a pothole is another!
And yes, we’ve reached the point where we have to explain the obvious. A video showing the repair of potholes in Kythira by crews from the Municipality of Kythira has been making the rounds online. This video was filmed ILLEGALLY and without the workers’ consent, and there may be legal consequences. NO ONE has the right to film a worker while they are on the job and without their consent!
Beyond the technicalities of the case, however, there is also the substance. This video does NOT show road paving, which would require compacting the asphalt with a road roller! It shows the filling, repair, and patching of potholes with COLD asphalt, a process that requires neither specialized knowledge nor specialized mechanical equipment.
The worker thoroughly cleans the pit; if it is very deep, material 3/A is poured in, and then the bag containing the cold asphalt is emptied into it, and the vehicle drives over it to compact it. This is done everywhere.
So what exactly raised questions? Why all the publicity? How exactly do these various experts and self-proclaimed engineers think potholes in the streets get filled in?;
»Find something else to do and leave the municipal staff—the few who are left—alone to do their jobs the way they know how."

The possibility of legal action
The Secretary-General’s clear warning regarding the legal aspects of the issue is particularly striking. Mr. Andronikos directly raises the issue of illegal recording and violation of the rights of municipal employees, noting that the video was recorded without their consent while they were performing their duties.
With this statement, the municipal authority leaves wide open the possibility of seeking legal recourse and initiating the prescribed legal proceedings against those who recorded and/or reproduced the material, thereby shifting the discussion from the technical aspect of repairing the damage to the realm of personal data protection and workplace rights.

The new secretary-general is a carbon copy of both Moses and the former cop who is now president as well. He files lawsuits and appeals in court and illegally judges the videos. But above all, he knows how to cover up the potholes.
Also, don't those idiots at city hall know that there are soil compactors?;
Whoever has the fly gets bitten. They’re all cut from the same cloth—the ”rulers” and their lackeys. They’re just party hacks—what else can you expect? After all, the big ox sleeps wherever it wants.
