During the period 1325-1504 Kythera was ruled by the Castellans. In 1504, at the request of the Kytherians, Venice decided that Kythera should be governed not by a simple Castellan, but by a senior Venetian official, the Provost, who was elected by the Great Council for a two-year term of office. The Provosts ruled Kythera until 1797. From 1325 to 1669 Kythera was administratively part of Venetian-occupied Crete. After the conquest of Crete by the Turks, Kythera became part of Corfu and the common historical fate connected it with the rest of the Ionian Islands.
Some of the names of Venetian Premonitionists and Castellans who passed through Kythera have remained forever on the island, either as baptismal names, or as adjectives, or as nicknames, or as place names. I'm summarizing some of them:
