Vasiliki Konstantinopoulou, the first runner to cross the finish line at the 39th Athens Marathon, is a moving sight.

«I had stopped playing sports because I had given birth. I was diagnosed four months after my child was born. Everyone is happy when a child is born, but I couldn’t be happy. The first thing that comes to mind is the worst-case scenario,» she said.
Referring to her first-place finish in the marathon, Vasiliki Konstantinopoulou said she couldn’t believe she had finished first, remarking «I hugged my husband, and a minute after I crossed the finish line, that’s when I started screaming.».
«I started out with the mindset that no matter what happened, I would finish at Kallimarmaro, regardless of my performance,» said Vasiliki, adding that she drew great strength and energy from the crowd.
