With the aim of supporting local beekeeping and informing producers about modern methods and challenges facing the industry, a two-day event is being organized in Kythira Beekeeping Seminar the Friday and Saturday, April 4–5, 2025, in the hall of the Kythira Agricultural Beekeeping Cooperative.
This initiative is part of the 2nd Call for Private Investments under the CLLD/LEADER Local Program 2014–2020, titled «Culture & Environment ON THE WATER» and is implemented by the Local Action Group Cooperative Network of Municipalities in the Attica Islands Regional Unit. The project is an approved action under the LEADER program with Project Code: LD012-0061815.
Seminar Topics
The seminar program includes specialized presentations on the key challenges of beekeeping, available funding tools, bee diseases, honey production techniques, as well as issues related to marketing and standardization.
Friday, April 4:
•Presentation of the Rural Development Program’s initiatives (speaker: Ioannis Rerras)
•Pests and diseases of bees:
•Nosemia (Antonopoulos, Athanasios)
•Diseases of Adult Bees (Dimitris Mavronasios)
•Diseases of the testicles (Spyros Vlogiannis)
Saturday, April 5:
•Flowering and cultivation techniques:
•Selection of a site for beekeeping, nomadic beekeeping, modern intensive methods, plants beneficial to bees (Rerras, Vlogiannis, Mavronasios, Antonopoulos)
•Commercial and legal aspects:
•Legislation, organic beekeeping, and the transition from conventional practices
Organization
The seminar is under the scientific and organizational supervision of the Agrolysi Geotechnical Engineering Firm, General Partnership., with the active support of Kythira Agricultural Beekeeping Cooperative. The seminar aims to enhance the knowledge of the island’s beekeepers and to create a more organized framework for honey production and distribution.
With the assistance of researchers and industry professionals, beekeepers on Kythira are given the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and practices, while also supporting local production and the local economy.
