The deadline for submitting tax returns expires today

The deadline for submitting the tax returns and according to sources from the Ministry of Finance, There will be no further extension, especially given that, as of yesterday, approximately 82,000 fewer tax returns had been filed compared to the corresponding last day of the filing deadline last year.

Consequently, it is believed that this difference compared to 2020 can now be bridged.

It should be noted that, last year, after the deadline had passed, approximately 72,000 tax returns were filed—either because this option was available—for those who had passed away—or by paying the applicable fine.

As of late last night, approximately 6,290,000 tax returns had been filed, while last year, by the last day—August 31—6,372,415 had been filed. In total, 6,444,479 tax returns were filed in 2020.

An analysis of the data from the tax returns filed as of yesterday shows, among other things, that Seven out of ten do not pay any additional tax. Here are the details:

According to official figures, 8,536,608 tax assessment notices have been issued to date.

Of these, 2,791,362—or 32.7%—were assessed as liable for tax, and an additional tax of 2.6 billion euros was levied on them. The average tax these taxpayers are required to pay is approximately 937.6 euros. Last year, by comparison, 36,51% of the tax returns showed a tax liability, and the average tax was 1,101 euros.

There were 1,390,392 credit tax returns, or 16.29%, and the total refund amount is 376 million. The average refund amount is 271 euros. Last year, by comparison, 12.28% of taxpayers received a credit, and the average refund amount was 348 euros.

The clearinghouses' 51,01% was zero, or 4,354,854, while last year it was 51,21%.

The payment deadlines are as follows:

– By Friday, September 17, two installments (for July and August) must be paid.

– The current month’s installment must be paid on time by the end of September.

– For the coming months, from October through February 2022, one installment will be paid to make up the eight installments provided for.

Please note that the 3% discount does not apply to the lump-sum payment of the total tax due. This applied to returns filed by the end of August, by which date the tax was also required to be paid.
