The Ministry of National Economy and Finance offers significant room for maneuver and a substantial «breathing space» are being provided to the Greek economy and contracting authorities by the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, which is proceeding with a realignment of the milestones and deadlines for the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).
As revealed in a report by Powergame.gr, the government—in full consultation with the European Commission—proceeded with a «tacit» but decisive extension of the deadlines in order to ensure the smooth completion of the funded actions and to avoid the risk of losing EU funds.
New Milestones and Key Dates
The decision, signed by Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanasis, introduces two key changes to the implementation timeline:
- 4-month extension for the physical scope: The deadline for completion of the physical work on the projects is being extended from August 31, 2026, to December 31, 2026.
- Two-month timeline for institutional milestones: The deadline for achieving the agreed milestones and targets is extended for the August 31, 2026 (instead of the original June 30).
Decongestion, Reorganization, and Discharges
This development relieves the pressure on implementing agencies that were facing tight deadlines due to bureaucratic or technical delays. At the same time, the extension is accompanied by a rigorous assessment of the portfolio: projects with low absorption rates or insurmountable obstacles are removed, while resources are directed toward highly mature initiatives.
With this measure, Greece aims to exhaust every possibility for the full absorption of European funds, ensuring that infrastructure projects and reforms are completed without jeopardizing their funding.
