On the last Sunday of January, Karavas Kythera became a big hug. Residents and visitors from every corner gathered to honour the memory of Kosmas Tzortzopoulos, the beloved president of the local community, who passed away early, leaving behind a great legacy of humanity and contribution.
The day began with a memorial service at the Church of St. Charalambos. Afterwards, the attendees headed to the Patricio Agricultural School, which was filled with feelings of love and nostalgia.
In this special place, a century-old plane tree was planted as a symbol of eternal memory. The tree, donated by the «Oranges of Kythera» Association, was already planned to be placed while Kosmas was still with us, expressing our appreciation and deep gratitude for his contribution.
Next to the tree, the emotion was pervasive. His brother, Thanasis Tzortzopoulos, and the president of the Association, Pavlos Koroneos, spoke about the brother, the friend, the tireless president of the community. Heartfelt words accompanied the planting of the plane tree, with the attendees symbolically pouring soil, as a promise that the memory of Kosmas will take deep roots, like the tree.
The day ended with a rich buffet, full of goodies made by the villagers of Karavas and the villagers of Karavas who wished to make them for joys, but also of the surrounding villages. At the entrance of the village and at the Patricio Agricultural School, large banners with Kosmas' photo welcomed all those who came to honour him. Warm thanks to Mr. Koroneo for this capture.
The presence of visitors from Athens, Kalamata and Neapolis caused particular joy and emotion. Among them, the president of the Kalamata community and the delegation of the «Ostria» team from Neapolis, who arrived on the island by boat to pay their own tribute.
Karavas became for one day the centre of a large family that joined forces to honour a great man. We thank from the bottom of our hearts all those who joined us and gave strength with their presence. Cosmas Tzortzopoulos will always remain alive in our memory, a symbol of love and selfless giving, not only in words but also in deeds.
