Theodoros Katsanevas: Historic PASOK member dies of coronavirus

The former PASOK MP Theo Kachanevas, who had been hospitalized at Sismanoglio since May 3, lost the battle.

Former PASOK MP Theouros Katsanevas, who was defeated by coronavirus, breathed his last breath at the age of 74.

He was hospitalized since April 19 at Sismanoglio and on May 3 he was intubated.

Theo Katsanevas became ill after being vaccinated, but without having had time to build up antibodies.

As he had written on his personal Facebook account , he had received the Pfizer vaccine on Wednesday, April 14.

“The unfortunate thing is that I had the Pfizer vaccine last Wednesday 14 April, but apparently by Sunday 18/4 when I had my first symptoms, I was caught up with the coronavirus immediately afterwards, for an unknown reason, despite all the precautions I was taking.

So the vaccine has not had time to create the necessary antibodies, although it may help to treat it gently in the meantime,» he explains. The former MP had remained in isolation at home with mild symptoms.

“I didn't stop working but at a slower pace. On Tuesday 20/4 at 11 am. and 6-8 p.m. in the afternoon, as every Tuesday, I participated in the regular professional orientation seminar that I am responsible for under the auspices of the University of Piraeus, with the distinguished professor of human resources of our University and friend Leonidas Hytiris,” he noted in his post.

Who was Theodoros Katsanevas
He was born in Athens in 1947 and studied Economics at the University of Piraeus. He completed his studies at the University of Warwick, UK, obtaining an MA in Industrial Relations and a PhD in Labour Economics at the London School of Economics.

During the dictatorship he participated in the resistance organisation DEA and PAK England and after the fall of the Junta he participated in the founding of PASOK. In 1981 he participated in the drafting of PASOK's government programme on social issues and in the same year he was appointed president of the OAED, a position he held until 1985, when he was appointed governor of the IKA. In 1987 he was elected a member of PASOK's executive bureau, while retaining his membership of the party's central committee. He has two children from his first marriage to Sophia Papandreou, daughter of former Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, whom he divorced in 2000. He later married Georgia Tsetsou, with whom he had a daughter.

From 1989 to 2000 he stood as a candidate for PASOK in the Athens Constituency B in a total of 6 consecutive elections. He was elected the first three times (9th in June 1989, 12th in November 1989 and 9th in 1990), while he failed to be elected in the 1993 elections (17th place and first runner-up).

In 1996 he was re-elected (5th place), while the last time he stood as a candidate, in 2000, he failed to be elected (19th and again first runner-up), but a few months later he entered Parliament replacing Milena Apostolaki who lost her seat in the Electoral Court due to ineligibility.

In 2004, he was removed from the party's list of candidates along with eight other MPs for signing a specific amendment on Porto Carras.

On 1 May 2013, he founded a political party called «Drahmi, the Greek Democratic Five Star Movement» - modelled on the Five Star Movement of Italian Beppe Grillo.

In 2019 Theodoros Katsanevas became a member of the Political Council and the Economic Committee of the Hellenic Solution Party.

Shortly after the European elections of the same year, his candidacy in the North of Athens and the North Sector was announced, but after a few days it was cancelled by Kyriakos Velopoulos, while Katsanevas himself denied his candidacy with Hellenic Solution.
