The profile of the candidates for the European Parliament

Men, in their fifties, lawyers, academics, doctors, and journalists are the most common profiles of candidates on the European election lists of Greek parties, according to the new policy paper by the Center for Liberal Studies (KEFIM).

According to the main conclusions of the analysis and across all candidates, 58% are men and 42% are women. The average age is 53 for male candidates and 50 for female candidates. 36% have completed university (without a master's degree), 22% hold a master's degree, and 19% hold a doctorate. The most common professions among candidates are lawyer and university professor (8.4%), followed by doctor (7.8%), journalist (7.5%), and artist (6.5%). Finally, 18% of the candidates have been re-elected in previous elections (municipal, national, or European), while 13% have been appointed to a political position.

By party: SYRIZA and New Left have the highest percentage of female candidates (50%), while New Democracy, PASOK, Greek Solution, and Niki have the lowest (38%). The highest average age is among candidates from New Left (55.1 years) and New Democracy (54.4 years), while the lowest is among SYRIZA candidates (48 years). The New Left has the highest percentage of candidates with a doctorate (38%), PASOK has the highest percentage of candidates with a bachelor's and master's degree (38%), while the KKE has the highest percentage of candidates with only a bachelor's degree (62%).

The professions most represented per party, in the order listed in the relevant KEFIM press release, are: In ND, journalist, lawyer, doctor. In SYRIZA, lawyer, doctor, journalist, academic, athlete, artist. In PASOK, academic, lawyer, doctor, teacher, researcher. In KKE, lawyer, journalist, doctor. In Elliniki Lisi, merchant, private employee, farmer/rancher, doctor. In Nea Aristera, academic, journalist, freelancer. In Niki, doctor, lawyer, armed forces officer, university professor, teacher, artist. In Plevsi Eleftherias, artist, athlete, lawyer, NGO executive.
