Alkis Kampanos Trial: All 12 Defendants Found Guilty by Unanimous Verdict

The 12 defendants accused of murdering Alkis Kampanos and injuring his two friends during the brutal fan attack that shocked the entire country in the early hours of February 1, 2022, in the Harilaou neighborhood.

The judges of the Criminal Court (three regular judges and four jurors) reached their verdict after several days of deliberation, having evaluated all the evidence, the testimonies and statements of the defendants, as presented during the 47 court sessions that took place over the past five and a half months.

Shortly after 9:45 a.m., the court took the bench in a packed courtroom, with the presiding judge calling on the defendants one by one to rise from their seats so that she could read the verdict to them.

The charge of joint premeditated murder (in Alkis’s case) was reduced to murder with possible intent (as were the attempted murders of his two friends), while 7 of them were found guilty as principal perpetrators of this crime and the remaining 5 as accomplices. The verdict was unanimous regarding the murder of Alkis and his friend, while it was a majority decision (5-2) regarding the second injured young man.

Specifically, the 12 defendants were found guilty of the following acts:

– The first defendant was found guilty of murder committed in concert with possible intent (Alki), attempted murder in concert with possible intent (his friend), and by a majority vote (5-2) for attempted murder in concert with possible intent (second victim). Unanimously for a brawl in the form of an assault resulting in death, with a sports-related context and possession of an object (with the aggravating circumstances under the Sports Law), as well as for illegal possession and use of a weapon.

– The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 9th, and 11th defendants were unanimously found guilty of joint manslaughter with possible intent, attempted murder committed jointly with possible intent, and by a majority vote (5-2) for aiding and abetting attempted murder committed jointly with possible intent. Unanimously found guilty of a brawl in the form of an assault, resulting in death in a sporting context and possession of an object (with the aggravating circumstances under the Sports Law), as well as for illegal possession and use of a weapon.

– The 1st, 5th, 6th, 8th, and 12th defendants were unanimously found guilty of complicity in murder with possible intent (Alkis), complicity in attempted murder with possible intent (Alkis’s friend), and by a majority vote (5-2) for complicity in attempted murder with possible intent (the second injured youth). Unanimously found guilty of a brawl in the form of an assault resulting in death, with a sports-related context and possession of an object (with the aggravating circumstances under the Sports Law), as well as unanimously, where applicable, for illegal possession and use of a weapon.

In cases where a majority opinion was reached, as announced by the court, the two regular judges were in the minority, holding the view that the charge of attempted murder against Alkis’s second friend should be reduced to aggravated assault.

The court adjourned the proceedings pending the consideration of mitigating circumstances to be requested by the defense attorneys on behalf of their clients.

When the court adjourned, the crowd booed the 12 defendants.
