«I consider it my duty to overcome the obstacle of simple proportional representation as quickly as possible, and I intend to return the exploratory mandate to you this afternoon so that we can hold elections, possibly as early as June 25,» emphasized, among other things, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his meeting with President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, at which he received the first exploratory mandate to form a government following theyesterday’s elections.
The prime minister emphasized that the country needs a strong government with a four-year term as soon as possible and insisted that «the best thing for the country is to discuss the real problems—how to raise wages and how to support the welfare state—but also to talk about the challenges and issues facing the younger generation.».
Mr. Mitsotakis described yesterday’s election results as a step forward in political maturity, while reiterating that the results clearly show there is no basis for forming a governmentby the current Parliament.
The President of the Republic said, as she welcomed Mr. Mitsotakis at the Presidential Palace that the Speaker of Parliament had just presented her with the official election results and that she had invited the Prime Minister to present him with the first exploratory mandate to form a government.
