Relatives, friends, colleagues, employees and citizens will say their last goodbye today to Yannis Boutaris, the former mayor of Thessaloniki, businessman and winemaker, who passed away last Saturday at the age of 82.
The political funeral of Yannis Boutaris will be held in the atrium of the Thessaloniki City Hall, where his body will be displayed, from 11 am to 2 pm, so that the people of Thessaloniki can bid him farewell on his last journey.
His political funeral will be attended by the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who will address speeches, while the President of PASOK - Kinal, Nikos Androulakis, will also be present.
The Mayor of Thessaloniki, Stelios Angeloudis, as well as the Greek Wine Association and a member of Yannis Boutaris' family will also give speeches.
The body of Yannis Boutaris, who breathed his last on Saturday night in a private hospital in Thessaloniki, will be cremated - a choice he had made in life.
A chemistry graduate of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, a qualified oenologist, he has been involved for years with wines and was elected as the 60th mayor of Thessaloniki in 2010, for two consecutive terms, until 2019. He was president of the Holocaust Museum of Greece, a founding member of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art and the Centre for Support of Addicts «Oasis», as well as founder of «Arcturus». He was honoured with many international and national awards.
