Can the Russia to become the first major country to officially recognise the pseudo-state of Cyprus, ignoring all relevant UN resolutions and causing a very big change in the status of the region;
According to the former Turkish Foreign Minister, Yasar Yakis, who wrote an article on the subject in Arab News, the above scenario, clearly damaging to Greek and Cypriot interests, has a chance of coming true.
Referring to the recent meeting of the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan with the Vladimir Putin, the Turkish politician (a member of the ruling AKP) says that the Cyprus problem was high on the agenda of the two leaders.
Citing a statement by Aleksandr Dugin, an adviser to Putin and an expert on geopolitics, Yakis wrote that he “implied that in case Turkey changes its position on the Crimea issue, then Russia may recognise Turkish sovereignty in Northern Cyprus”.
A possible Russian recognition of the pseudo-state will further strengthen the Turkish argumentation which now speaks of a two-state solution on the island and will of course cause a chain reaction of the players with interests in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Automatically, any talks for the resolution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the Bi-zonal Bicommunal Federation are very likely to end in a definitive wreck.
Turkey, of course, in order to change its position on Crimea, would have to displease the Americans and its NATO allies in general. But it will not be the first time it has done so.
