Through gov.gr the civil marriage license is now issued by the municipalities of the country. Citizens have the opportunity to digitally apply from their municipality for the issuance of the civil marriage license and receive it in their personal mailbox (my.gov.gr) according to the joint decision of the Minister of Digital Governance Kyriakos Pierrakakis and the Deputy Minister of Digital Governance Thodoris Livanios and in cooperation with the Minister of Interior Makis Voridis and Deputy Minister Stelios Petsas.
The service can be accessed via gov.gr, under the «Family» section and the subsection «Marriage/cohabitation». Through a very simple procedure, people can complete all the procedures required for a civil marriage quickly, easily and without unnecessary bureaucracy. Specifically:
- Either of the two future spouses logs in to the platform using Taxisnet or web banking codes
Fill in his/her details, the details of the future spouse and attach the page of the newspaper where the marriage notice was published, as well as a proof of permanent residence
issue and pay the relevant electronic fee; and
Submit the application
A civil marriage license is issued after seven (7) calendar days to allow the necessary time for filing complaints. Once issued, the civil marriage licence is sent to the citizen's mailbox (my.gov.gr), who is informed by e-mail and text message (SMS).
It is clarified that the digital civil marriage licence service is provided through the municipalities' mailboxes on gov.gr. The Ministry of Digital Governance has already set up boxes for all 332 municipalities in the country. The activation of the mailbox is done at the request of each municipality. So far 159 municipalities in the country have activated their mailbox. Citizens can find out about the municipalities that have joined gov.gr at the following link: https://aitiseis-dhmoi.services.gov.gr/dhmoi/.
The issuance of a civil marriage license through gov.gr is added to the joint actions planned and implemented for more than three years by the Ministries of Digital Governance and Interior for the digitization of municipal services, with the support of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece. The design and development of the service was carried out by the General Secretariat for Digital Governance and Simplification of Procedures and the National Network of Infrastructures for Technology and Research (EDYTE SA - GRNET) with the support of applications of the General Secretariat for Public Administration Information Systems of the Ministry of Digital Governance.
