Twenty-four-hour nationwide strike in all categories of ships announced by the Panhellenic Seamen's Federation (PNO) for the Friday 28 February. The strike will start at 00:01 in the morning and will last until midnight on the same day (24:00), causing a significant impact on ferry services.
Η Executive Committee of PNO, which met today, decided on the new mobilisation in response to issues concerning the the safety of maritime cabotage, but also as a sign of protest for the tragic railway accident in Tempe, which brought to the fore the need for stricter controls and improved security measures in transport.
According to information, PNO is expected to send excerpts within the next few days, in which it will take a detailed position on the outstanding issues in the shipping sector, asking for guarantees for the safeguarding the working conditions of seafarers and the more effective protection of passengers in maritime transport.
The PNO strike is expected to cause problems for ferry services throughout the country, affecting the connection between mainland Greece and the islands. Passengers planning to travel on Friday are advised to contact the ferry companies for possible modifications or cancellations to their itineraries.
The seafarers' mobilisation adds to a general climate of unrest in the transport sector, with trade unions complain of shortcomings in security controls and request direct government interventions to protect passengers and workers.
