The former rector of the University of Crete, former MEP, writer and university teacher, George Grammatikakis, has passed away. George Grammatikakis was recently hospitalized at the Pagni and the news of his death has spread sadness. In 1982 he was elected professor in the Department of Physics. He was Rector of the University of Crete during the period 1990-1996. He retired and was elected professor emeritus of the Department in 2006. He was elected as a member of the European Parliament with «To Potami» in 2014.
Biographical Data
George Grammatikakis was born in Heraklion, Crete. He studied physics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and continued with postgraduate studies at Imperial College London. He obtained his PhD in 1973 and his thesis was entitled “Analysis of some multiparticle final state in 10 and 6 GeV/c K-p interactions”.
In May 1962, following a legal action brought by members of the extreme right-wing student factions SDOE and EKOF against the administration of the Administrative Committee of Associations of the University of Athens (DESPA), the court appointed him a member of the new board of directors of DESPA, a position from which he immediately resigned, denouncing a conspiracy.
From 1982 to 2006, when he retired and was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus, he was a professor at the Department of Physics[3] of the University of Crete. From 1990 to 1996 he was Rector of the University of Crete.
