Just a few hundred metres away from the municipality of Istria is the fire in Evia, with residents making heartbreaking calls for air and water drops.
«Evia sends out an SOS»
Speaking on OPEN's midday newscast, the deputy prefect of Evia, George Kelaiditis, spoke of anguished cries to the General Secretariat of Civil Protection for ground and airborne means, which he said «did not come».
He claimed that «unfortunately the fire that broke out last Tuesday in the Lake area coincided with the fire in Varybobi and all the other incidents. Unfortunately the [fire] resources didn't come and it spread to this very large area and right now two municipalities are in a state of emergency as we have hundreds of burnt houses, more than 300,000 acres of burnt land and businesses burnt. Things are desperate and today we are dealing with the two major fronts.».
