From the first moment the US president set foot on the runway at Beijing airport, the message was clear: Beijing is offering full honors to Trump, seeking a channel of communication that will prevent a rift.
The presence of Vice President Han Jeng at the reception - instead of a lower-ranking official selected in 2017 - is a move of high diplomatic value. Han, who also attended Trump's inauguration, accompanied the US president on the red carpet, while dozens of children carrying flags of the two countries sang rhythmic welcome slogans.
Trump, before boarding the presidential limousine, greeted the crowd with his characteristic raised fist, setting the tone for a visit that, though diplomatic, retains his personal political stamp.
The «entourage» that attracts attention
Of particular interest is the composition of the US mission. In addition to his family members (Eric and Lara Trump), Elon Musk was on board Air Force One. The presence of the Tesla and Space X strongman in Beijing is not considered a coincidence, as his interests in the Chinese market are huge and his role as a «link» between the two powers is constantly being strengthened.
Thursday's agenda
The «main course» of the visit is scheduled for Thursday morning. Donald Trump will have a one-on-one meeting with Xi Jinping, in a meeting where «hot» issues are expected to be on the table:
- Trade tariffs and the new economic equilibrium.
- Technological competition (AI, semiconductors).
- Regional security in Asia.
The question hanging over Beijing is whether the «grand welcome» will translate into substantial concessions at the negotiating table or whether it is just a carefully staged diplomatic courtesy.
