The picture that emerges from the search for air tickets to Kythera this summer leaves no room for doubt: prices are high and choices are limited. For example, for the Saturday 26 July 2025, the ticket of the Sky Express from Athens reaches the €147,62, while for the same dates the Aegean/Olympic Air offers prices starting from €119,62 (Light) and up to €137,62 (Family).
In order for a family of three to fly to Kythera at the end of July, the following are required 400 euros just for going - and that without luggage! And if you add the return journey, the cost doubles and comes very close to... going abroad.
This is not tourism development. It is exclusion. See Aegean:

And in the sea... the chaos of Aqua Jewel. Competition on the ferry is rising
And if someone thinks about choosing the ship, there is joy and disappointment waiting for them. The this year's summer program of the Aqua Jewel is characterized by paradoxical routes, with the most glaring example being departure from Piraeus at 06:35 in the morning! Wake up at 4:00 and arrive at the port with the night still dark, to start a holiday in Chirigo? At the same time «breaks» the established «weekend» from Piraeus to Kythera.
But there's also something happening that we haven't seen in years. 5 times a week departure from Gythio to Kythera.
«Battle» Aqua Jewel - Porphyrousa in Porthmae
And of course, with 5 routes per week from Gythio, the Aqua Jewel essentially hits the “Purple” directly”, the small boat that has been keeping the connection between Laconia and Kythera alive for years. The competition now seems to be more intense than ever, and local authorities are spectators to a rickety transport plan.
Who will defend the Chirigoi?;
The summer of 2025 in Kythera is predicted tough in these circumstances. At a time when all over Greece, from tickets to fuel and basic goods, everything is getting more expensive, residents and professionals are worried. Transport - whether by plane or boat - seems to be are not characterised by any kind of design. In all this landscape:
Is there anyone in local government who intervenes?;
Who is defending the needs of Kytherians, the island's professionals and visitors?;
Η inaction and silence is deafening.
Kythera cannot be turned into a destination only for a select few. If we continue like this, holidays in Chirigo will be accessible only to those who fly... with a drone. Already May is closing as the worst in recent years according to testimonies of local professionals...
