Zacharias Souris
Candidate Mayor of Kythera-Antikythera
Kythera 09 August 2023
PRESS RELEASE
«The problems in water supply are due to wrong planning and lack of political will»
The technical service of the Municipality of Kythera-Antikythera and the desalination plant in Diakofti were visited by delegations of the «All Together» faction.
The meeting with the Technical Service was led by the candidate Mayor Zacharias Souris and attended by the candidates Elena Mageirou, Nikos Magoulas, Parris Georgilas and Theodoros Zantiotis.
In Diakofti, Zacharias Souris was accompanied by the candidates Nikos Magoulas and Hippolytos Prekas.
The delegation was briefed by the Head of the Technical Service Mr. Konstantinos Stathis and employees whom we thank very much and acknowledge their contribution.
The issue that dominated the discussion is the water supply and whether the current Municipal Authority can guarantee that in the heart of the tourist season there will be no interruptions while the quality of water will be appropriate... Unfortunately, the assessment of the delegation of «All Together» is that due to lack of political will and proper planning (delays in many projects) the uninterrupted water supply to the settlements of our islands is not guaranteed. It is characteristic that there is a significant delay in the drilling of boreholes, some of which have been in operation for the last few days... The problem of water theft and non-payment of bills was also highlighted.
The desalination plant in Diakofti was put into operation, albeit very late, while it remains unknown when the operation of the desalination plant in Agia Pelagia will start...
It is common knowledge that the situation in the water supply network is not the best (about 200 of the 450 km of pipelines are of old type and have not been replaced). The positive steps that have been taken (telemetry screen, etc.) and the self-denial of the workers are not enough to cover the mistakes of the municipal authority.
The meeting at the Technical Service also discussed issues related to redevelopment, sewerage and biological treatment projects.
Finally, a special reference was made to the need for excellent operation of the cleaning service, a subject to which we will return.
After the meeting, mayoral candidate Zacharias Souris said:
«Our visit to the Technical Service of the Municipality is also linked to the new strategy that we want to bring to our islands in terms of infrastructure. To act proactively, to take all the necessary measures in time so that we do not run afterwards to «patch» the holes in an incomplete planning. It is unacceptable to be in the middle of summer and not to be sure of the sufficiency of quality water and the proper functioning of the network.
I would like to thank the staff of Techn. I would like to thank the technical staff of the Technical Service for their conscientiousness and the great efforts they make to cover the water shortages in many settlements of our island.
We will be in constant contact with municipal employees and residents, listening to their suggestions and practicing best practices. Water supply, sanitation, sewerage and of course redevelopment cannot be handled with amateurism and authoritarianism of any «know-it-all».
We ask the Kythiraikos people for the mandate to change the bad things.
