The charge for the brutal beating of archaeologist Manolis Psarros, who was attacked while returning home from his work in Mykonos, has been upgraded. The case, which was originally treated as a misdemeanour, is now upgraded to a felony of bodily harm.
«We came to Mykonos to support our colleagues and send a message that we are not afraid», said the president of the Association of Greek Archaeologists, Despina Koutsouba, who visited the island.
Despina Koutsouba called on the citizens of Mykonos and the island's institutions «to isolate the elements who act in a mafioso way», denouncing new threats against archaeologists.
«It has happened that colleagues have gone for an autopsy, at the request of a prosecutor, and they could not enter because the goons closed the door,» he complained, among other things.
As he stressed, «we came forward because we believe that there are other people determined to get rid of these schemes but for this to happen we need the assistance of the government. Fear must change camps and those who beat up our colleague must get the message.».
«For us it is very simple. Are they hitting one of us? We have to get an answer from the state. They have to understand that mafia practices don't pass!» noted the president of the Association of Greek Archaeologists Despina Koutsouba.
Asked about the upgrading of the beating to a felony, she commented that «we are satisfied with this development because phones will be opened so that we have more evidence to lead us to the natural and moral perpetrator because it is clear that the matter was not personal. For us it is very simple. Are they hitting one of us? We have to get an answer from the state. They have to understand that mafia practices do not pass!».
