Manos Eleftheriou: The Poet Who Never Became a Decorative Figure

«People don't die of old age. They die from the dust that gathers on their dreams.»

Manos Eleftheriou said this in *The Time of Chrysanthemums*, but I’m very much afraid that modern Greek cynicism has interpreted it as just another charming, sentimental line to adorn calendars. What a shame. Because this phrase isn’t lyricism—it’s a forensic report.

In fact, Eleftheriou described the fundamental affliction of the modern Greek: his eternal tendency to put everything on the back burner. To let the dust of daily survival, petty-bourgeois compromise, and intellectual laziness cover everything that once made him think, rebel, or at least suffer creatively.

Death is not a biological issue. Biology is merely nature’s bureaucracy. True, irrevocable death is the loss of aesthetic and ideological alertness. And in this realm, Eleftheriou was a rebel in a suit.

Modern Greek life has a terrifying ability: it takes poets, disarms them, and transforms them into painless, traditional shrines. It did this to Seferis, it did this to Ritsos, and it is trying to do the same to Eleftheriou.

When Eleftheriou wrote «Malamatenia Logia,» he wasn’t writing a catchy little song for us to sing while drunk in taverns. He conducted a sober, political analysis of our historic defeat:

«How fate and the passing years have shaped things

»not to listen to a poet…"

Who is the «poet» we haven’t heard? It is historical consciousness itself, buried beneath the dust of consumerism and political fraud. Eleftheriou wasn’t «melancholic»; he was disgusted by the intellectual decline and chose poetry so he wouldn’t have to scream in the streets.

If we want to understand who Manos was, let’s set aside the hit songs for a moment and read *The Imaginary Wolf*. There is no saccharine sentimentality there. There is the creator’s conflict with the Beast, and the Beast is not time, but the decay of consciousness.

«I am not the one you are waiting for; I am not even your shadow,

»I am a tree burning in the middle of the desert…"

Eleftheriou would rather be a tree that burns than a tree covered in dust. That is what distinguishes the artist from the art professional.

Eight years after his passing, Manos Eleftheriou leaves us with a solemn yet redemptive message. We must not let the grind of daily life dull our sensitivity. We must blow away the dust that gathers on our desires, our ideas, our loves, and our art.

He himself never died because he made sure to keep his dreams crystal clear, sharing them with us through hundreds of verses. And every time we smile, get emotional, or softly hum one of his lines, we, in turn, blow away the dust, keeping him—and ourselves—deeply alive.

Eight years after his passing, Manos Eleftheriou remains dangerously relevant. Not because we remember him with memorial services and anniversaries—those are for politicians and despots.

He remains relevant because every time one of his lyrics bothers us, every time we realize how much dust we’ve let settle on our own lives, Eleftheriou gives us a gentle nudge.

So don’t cry over his age or his passing. Cry for the dust that has gathered on your own dreams, and if you have even a shred of aesthetic sensibility left, make sure to dust them off before you, too, become part of our official, national landscape.
