«A »surge” in cases has been recorded over the past 24 hours, with scientists expecting a further escalation by New Year’s Day—a trend that is not directly attributed to the Omicron variant— however, it is clear that the new variant is exacerbating the country’s already dire epidemiological situation.
Today, on Christmas Day, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) reported 6,590 new cases, 58 deaths, and 617 patients on ventilators.
More specifically, the epidemiological report by the National Public Health Organization (EODY) states:
«The number of new laboratory-confirmed cases of the disease recorded in the last 24 hours is 6,590, of which 11 were identified following screenings at the country’s entry points. The total number of cases stands at 1,070,833 (daily change +0.6%), of which 50.4% are men. Based on confirmed cases over the past 7 days, 213 are considered to be related to travel from abroad, and 2,686 are linked to a previously known case.
There have been 58 new deaths among COVID-19 patients, bringing the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 20,350. 95.2% had an underlying medical condition and/or was 70 years of age or older.
The number of patients hospitalized and intubated is 617 (60.0% men). Their median age is 63 years. 79.1% have an underlying medical condition and/or are 70 years of age or older. Among the patients currently hospitalized and intubated, 518 (83.95%) are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, and 99 (16.05%) are fully vaccinated. Since the start of the pandemic, 3,713 patients have been discharged from ICUs.
The number of new COVID-19 patients admitted to hospitals nationwide is 312 (daily change: -8,77%). The seven-day average of admissions is 321 patients.
The median age of cases is 38 years (range 0.2 to 106 years), while the median age of deaths is 78 years (range 0.2 to 106 years).»
