On 3 October 2024, the George Floras will be held on Brussels to present his report before her Committee on Petitions of European Parliament (EP). This report focuses on the systematic violation of the confidentiality of communications millions of citizens in the Greece, as documented by the 96 decisions of Authority for the Protection of Communications Privacy (ADAE) over the past seven years.
Mr. Flora's complaint has already been referred to the LIBE Committee of the European Parliament, which is investigating the violation of the rule of law in Greece. He denounces the ongoing indifference of the major telecommunications companies Greece to comply with the European ePrivacy Directive, as well as the inadequate penalties imposed by the ADAE regarding the violations. According to Mr. Flora, the telecommunications companies systematically violated the privacy of millions of subscribers’ communications by handing over their data to criminal elements, while the Greek Justice, as he claims, provided criminal immunity to those who were in charge until recently.
The hearing is expected to give voice to allegations that, according to Mr. Flora, have not been widely heard in Greece. He hopes that the European Parliament will reveal the politically and financial interests that lie behind this crisis and will take measures to protection of rights of citizens.
The hearing will be broadcast live on 3 October 2024, on 3:30 p.m. Belgian time, and anyone interested can watch it via the link: PETI Committee Meeting.
