In the spring atmosphere of Easter, Kythera experiences the culmination of its religious tradition. The «Gyra of Panagia», the procession of the miraculous icon of Panagia Myrtidiotissa, is not just a custom. It is a march of blessing that unites every village, every settlement and every generation of Kytherians.
A custom with deep roots in time
The official establishment of the litany, as we know it today, was made in 1842 by a decision of the local government. It was the time when the Icon returned to the Monastery of Myrtidia, after its long stay in the Castle of Chora for protection from pirate raids. However, historical sources and records (such as the encyclical of Bishop Anthimos in 1786) testify that the gyra was already a «worn-out habit» from the 18th century.
The Program: From Chora to every corner of the island
The holy pilgrimage has specific stops and a strict ritual, which is followed reverently:
- Sunday of Orthodoxy: The icon of Myrtidiotissa departs from its natural place, the Monastery of Myrtidia, and is transferred, accompanied by the faithful, to the Metropolitan Church of the Crucified in Chora, where it remains throughout the Holy Week.
- Easter Monday (New Monday): The long journey begins. The icon leaves Chora and begins its procession to the villages of the island.
- The course: For 15 whole days, the image passes from village to village. People of all ages walk miles, carrying it from parish to parish, passing through flowering paths, main roads and picturesque villages.
- Myrrh-bearer Sunday: The journey is complete. The icon takes the way back to the Monastery of Myrtidia, leaving behind the blessing and joy of the Resurrection.
The atmosphere in the villages
The arrival of the icon in each village is the important event. The bells ring joyfully and the inhabitants welcome the patron saint of the island with deep emotion.
The «Pollen of the Virgin Mary» is an experiential experience. Those who follow it, participate in a procession of centuries, keeping alive the rich cultural and religious heritage of Kythera.
