Toward the end of February, the two bills from the Ministry of the Interior—which were presented at the recent Cabinet meeting and concern the new electoral system for localand the establishment of Internal Audit Units in all General Government agencies, as Minister Makis Voridis stated in an interview with the radio station «SKAI 100.3.».
Mr. Voridis stated that he is in constant contact with the established bodies of local government and representatives of civil servants regarding the aforementioned bills.
When asked about the five-year term being established for elected officials and whether this would affect national elections, he noted that the two do not coincide and added: «I believe that there should be a clear distinction between local and national elections, and that local elections should not have the characteristics of a national election, as is the case with the European elections.».
Regarding the second bill, Mr. Voridis emphasized, among other things, that «We want to build a culture of integrity through an internal process».
Regarding the possibility of changes to the European elections and whether they will be held using the “cross-vote” system or a party list, the minister referred the matter to the prime minister. He expressed his preference for the party list system, noting that qualified but lesser-known candidates have a hard time winning the electorate’s vote.
