Cultural and Environmental Program «From the Ashes—Art, Memory, and Rebirth in the Burned Landscapes of Kythira»

August 21–31, 2026 – Mylopotamos – Chora

This initiative makes a significant contribution to highlighting the natural and cultural heritage of Kythira, raising environmental awareness, and fostering the active participation of the local community, with a particular focus on the Mylopotamos area, which was devastated by the fires of 2025.

The project combines various artistic media — Butoh dance, music, video art, visual art installations, and participatory workshops — creating a multisensory experience that unfolds against the natural and cultural backdrop of Kythira.

The story unfolds in four parts:

  • A dance video titled «After the Ashes: A Ritual for the Scorched Earth.». A poetic, cinematic portrayal of Butoh dance in a burned forest, featuring drone footage and live improvisation on the double bass and lyre.
  • Live Performance at the Old English School titled «After the Ashes: Sensory Traces.». A site-specific performance by four dancers accompanied by live music, in which the body becomes a vessel for memory, loss, and the return to life.
  • An art exhibition titled «Archives of Ash,» consisting of two parts:
    1. «After the Ashes» – Art Exhibition at Mercato.
Photographs, snapshots of the performance, and the installation «Archives of Ash,» as a curated visual interpretation of the experience in the scorched landscape.
  1. «Common Ground – Memory and Rebirth» – Participatory Community Exhibition.
The exhibition features photographs, artworks, and short recordings created through the participation of residents, photographers, artists, children, and everyone who took part in the workshops.
  • Environmental & Art Workshops titled «The Forest Remembers.». The event includes a presentation by an environmentalist and a botanist, a botanical walk, and a tea ceremony in Mylopotamos, as an introduction to the memory and rebirth of nature. This is followed by art workshops for children and adults using natural materials, with the opportunity to photograph the artwork in nature, connecting the landscape with the creative process.

Scientific presentation by environmental scientist Irini Vallianatou

  • Admission is free to the group exhibition and the environmental lecture.
  • Admission to the workshops and the performance and video art evenings requires a ticket.
  • Tickets will be available at the «Vivliogatos» bookstore in Livadi and at Follow Your Art in Kapsali, as well as at the event venues.
