The Ministry of Finance is considering submitting a new, supplementary budget in order to stem the wave of price increases expected this winter due to the energy crisis.
The subsidies that have already been budgeted amount to €8.5 billion to date and cover the period until the end of the year for electricity, natural gas, and fuel. For the second half of the year, €1.1 billion in spending was budgeted to tackle the energy crisis, while in August alone, nearly €200 million was already allocated.
Deputy Finance Minister Theodoros Skylakakis leaves open the possibility of a precision check being issued, but clarified that nothing will be announced until the fall.
As everything indicates, the new emergency allowance is estimated to be €200, with the final amount to be determined based on fiscal margins after the end of August. According to sources, the aim is to support vulnerable citizens and those most affected, and an increase in the number of beneficiaries is also being considered.
At present, the economic team is examining all scenarios for new interventions to address inflation. However, nothing can be announced at this time, and according to relevant sources, it is possible that this will be revealed in September, most likely at the Thessaloniki International Fair.
The government assures that additional fiscal space will be created in the summer, which will be returned to citizens in its entirety, while resources from the Transition Fund will also contribute to the firepower. The economic team always acts in line with the trend in natural gas prices and is proceeding with a plan covering two periods: the first until Christmas and the second until next Easter.
The following measures are being considered:
Accuracy Check 2: It will concern a larger number of beneficiaries. The amount is estimated at €200 and may be scaled.
Fuel pass 3: Extension or possibly reinforcement of the fuel allowance until the end of the year.
Heating allowance: An increase in the heating allowance is being considered, either through an increase in funding or an increase in the number of beneficiaries.
